Hygiene & Infection Control
Hygiene and infection
control is crucial in first aid to prevent the spread of harmful
bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. Here are some essential practices to
maintain infection control during first aid:
Hand Hygiene: Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before and
after providing first aid. If soap and water aren't available, use
alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Use Protective Gear: Wear disposable gloves whenever you're dealing with bodily
fluids, open wounds, or handling contaminated materials. Consider using masks,
goggles, or face shields when there's a risk of splashes or airborne particles.
Clean Wounds Properly: Gently clean wounds with mild soap and water to remove
dirt and debris. Avoid using hydrogen peroxide, iodine, or alcohol directly on
the wound, as they can damage tissue.
Cover Wounds: Use sterile dressings or bandages to cover wounds. This helps
prevent contamination and keeps the wound clean as it heals.
Body fluid disposal: Properly dispose of used gloves, dressings,
and any other materials that have come into contact with blood or bodily fluids
in a sealed plastic bag.
Avoid Cross-Contamination: Keep different first aid supplies separate and
properly labelled. Avoid touching surfaces or objects unnecessarily when
providing first aid.
Maintain a Clean Environment: If possible, clean the area where first aid is
being administered to reduce the risk of infection. Use disposable towels or
disinfectant wipes to clean surfaces.
Follow Safety Protocols: Ensure that all equipment used in first aid is
properly sanitized or sterilized according to guidelines.
